Personnel Security Interview
The PSI is an hour and a half to two hour-long interview that seeks a variety of information on the applicant's suitability and security. The subjects discussed are:
- Scope of background investigation
- Not read by some interviewers; gives important information that the scope of information requested is from age 18 and up except for arrests and employment-related matters
- Name and identifying information
- Citizenship
- Dual citizenship and home country issues are discussed.
- Education information and discipline in educational facilities
- Negative employment history
- Clubs, organizations, and activities
- Relatives and associates
- Roommates and co-habitants
- Military service
- Foreign activities and contacts
- Foreign travel
- Psychiatric/Psychological health
- Police record
- Alcohol and drug use
- Finances
- Civil court actions
- Allegiance to the United States
- Personal conduct
- Miscellaneous
- Have you ever failed a polygraph, etc.

After the PSI, the applicant is fingerprinted with the traditional fingerprint cards (as of May 2009), and escorted from the office. The drug urinalysis test may or may not be conducted on the same day, depending on scheduling.
